Andrea Marinoni
Associate Professor of Applied Remote Sensing at UiT The Arctic University of Norway and affiliated lecturer at the University of Cambridge
Andrea Marinoni is an Associate Professor of Applied Remote Sensing with the Earth Observation group at the Centre for Integrated Remote Sensing and Forecasting for Arctic Operations (CIRFA), Department of Physics and Technology, UiT The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø. He is also a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Technology at the University of Cambridge, UK. He was a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2022 and at the Earth Observatory of Singapore at Nanyang Technological University in 2023.
His work aims to assess, infer and predict interactions between people and the environment.
His research focuses on developing innovative data analysis methods that provide decision-makers with reliable information about Earth processes, human activities and their impact on human welfare. This supports the development of frameworks for sustainable development and climate change adaptation and mitigation.
More recently, he has focused on improving the efficiency of AI and its impact on people and the environment through new approaches to data processing, algorithmic modulation and energy-aware computation.
This work led to the first large-scale quantification of the impact of AI data centres on local communities and surrounding regions worldwide, known as the 'data heat island effect'.
